Bio

Michelle Brand is an ecological-designer-maker. She studied Product Design and Development at the University of Salford and Bioclimatic Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. 

Currently Designer in residence at Emerge Recycling, she specialises in upcycling and remanufacture of materials, and designing sustainable feedback loops within the waste and recycling stream. 

Previously she has been Research Associate and Associate Lecturer at the Postgraduate Art & Design school MIRIAD (The Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design) at Manchester Metropolitan University and Artist in residence at LIME, investigating creative closed-loop feedback systems within the NHS waste chain. 

Awards and prizes include a post-graduate bursary, AHRC, 2003; prize winner, Reworked Exhibition, Washington Gallery, Wales, 2006; Arts Council North-West grant, 2006, 2007, 2008; gold award in the ‘Environment’ section at the 9th Annual British Female Inventors and Innovators Network, 2007; and editors choice (Inhabitat) at HauteGREEN, New York, 2007; Northwest Development Agency Innovation Voucher, 2008 and 2009.

Her work has been exhibited in many galleries and spaces in Britain, as well as Milan, New York and Paris.
